Only a few kilometers from its source, the Nile forms a unique lake: Lake Kyoga. Right in the hearth of Africa, Lake Kyoga is one of the few fishing grounds remaining in the world where catches still consist mainly of mature fish. Tilapia often reaches 3 kg and Nile perch of over 30 kg. All fishermen on Lake Kyoga, practice exclusively artisanal fishing, The fish stock is sound and not over-fished.
Preserving these resources is vital for both the fishermen and the fish. The KyogaWild Project promotes sustainable fishing methods in Lake Kyoga.
Greenfields Ltd. has built a modern landing site to secure high quality and sustainable fish. The Fishermen are receiving new nets that guarantee good fishing practices. The fishery component developed in this project is the first certified sustainable freshwater fishery in Africa.
